I grew up on a farm in a pretty small community in Ohio. The lives of everyone around me revolved around church, high school sports, county fair, and the mall on weekends. I often felt that something was deeply missing for me in all these day to day routines back then. I would walk around the farm and wonder how life might be different in other places. Whenever I went to the library I always hung out in the non-fiction and biography section....I guess I was searching for the answer. I remember finding a book with about a snow festival in Japan where people would make gigantic ice sculptures. It was about a place called Sapporo, in northern Japan. I was absolutely mezmerized and confused and intrigued. I cannot remember the name of this book, but it lead me on a search of more books about Asia. Years passed and I forgot about that book, but it seemed like it didn't forget me... because about about 17 years later I took a job in Japan. I look back and think about how I lived in a tiny little place, but found a book that was a doorway to another world..leading me half way around the world.
