Social Networking
Just in two decades we have experienced a REVOLUTION where any ordinary person can be an author.  That's really great to have a voice, but with it comes responsibility.  HOW are social networking and self-publishing generating more confusion about facts?

Propaganda
Propaganda is false or exaggerated claims created to deceive or confuse.  It is usually associated with politics, but sometimes associated with other areas of knowledge production (marketing info about commercial interests for example.)

PR & Marketing

Public relations, marketing and advertising are tools used by business and industry to sell products, and also ideas.  The general public normally accepts the notoriously fantastic and fictional content of commercials, however the power the advertisements have to shape culture is also undeniable.

Parody & Satire
Fake News probably first became a topic when comedy shows created satirical and wickedly funny parody's of the news.  NOW, the "Fake News" concept has spilled over into memes, blogs, & independent entrepreneurs who create absurd content with the intent of generated income through clicks and shares.  Today, the real news and legitimate journalists have been fooled by false stories & even politicians are guilty of spreading false information as FAKE NEWS.

Big 6

Ask Ms. Deaton for a
mini-research lesson!

It can be within a big research topic, or just a segment that you need help with (like citation for example).  Sign up for time in the Learning Commons and I will bring out a variety of resources for your students to consider... from books, encyclopedias, magazines, and databases, and Destiny's Web-path Express.

I want to help you keep this a simple but also a VERY repeatable set of habits that you and your students can internalize.

PRACTICE
Just 10 Minutes a Week

Don't wait for the "Big Research" project.  Practice the basic tips EVERY WEEK (or every day!)  Don't overcomplicate your lessons with trying to find and curate information.... let the students do it!

#1  Take 10 Activity: Introduce a "What is ...?"  warm-up topic and ask the kids to find information on it.  Ask kids to write a short 2 sentence answer to the term PLUS the SOURCE and submit.  Do this as homework or a short search period in class with limited time to  find info.

#2  DISCUSS: Take the answers from a few volunteers and YOU help tease apart and put together the information that kids have curated...and what you want them to remember.

#3  CRITICALLY EVALUATE: While you have this open discussion, be sure to ask kids "WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT"  and clarify that "Google isn't a source, but a search engine."  and explore the reliability of source information.  Lastly, incorporate the idea of TRIANGULATING information which is what journalists and academics do to check the facts.  You may not have a The information you may have found sounds a little off to me, where did you find it? you want all students to While you have the final say in topic, entertain the good, bad, and ugly examples students share
