Orientation and "refresher" game in library reminds kids of library life at The Bend. I added quirky giphy files and game show theme music. Candy vouchers help "engage" the hungry mind! The PDF gives you a stripped down version... If you want the real thing though... come to the library!
Welcome Back to the Bend!
2018-19 BEGINS!
We have a wonderful new year planned. Plenty of news to share with faculty and students.... but first of all here are some of the important NUTS n BOLTS for faculty.
COLORED BUTCHER PAPER & LAMINATING:
available in the library. Other materials??? please request from Carla Kenny
FACULTY LAPTOPSwill be ready to pick up on Monday. IF you have an urgent need for one before then... I will provide. Otherwise please wait till Monday.
PRINTERS: printing available in library NOW!
I am going to create a FLIPPED VIDEO so every faculty member can add printers. I will need to iron out a few details on this but hope that you will see a link here by Monday the 20th. If you have issues with getting printers, ask Ms. Deaton, Mr. Pelman, or Ms. Hilliard as we will help you.
TECHNOLOGY CARTS for Classrooms:
We have a lot of new technology as well as many new classrooms so getting all of our technology is priority #1. Being realistic... hoping to get it to you by second week of school. IF you are in desperate need before then... we will likely be able to accomodate you.

Reader's and Writer's Book Club
It has been a really fun journey in our Reader's and Writer's Book Club. At the beginning of the year we had a phenomenal library, but no extra copies of books for our book club. We spent the Fall doing story starters and creative writing activities. I was personally astounded at how talented these young Tigers are! I know we will have some published authors one day... and I hope they will look back to these days as some of their early inspirations. In December our club was finally able to acquire book sets which were purchased from our earnings from the Book Fair. We had a really successful book fair and we ended up buying mulitple copies of some terrific books, including Wonder, Nine Pound Hammer, Refugee, Solo, Cinder and Forged by Fire. All of the students were surprised with a wrapped package that I prepared for them the day before the winter break (a "gift of reading" with hot chocolate too). In January we have met twice and have been working on how to share in a mini book talk the stories. In February our goal is to appear in a special segment that we will put on Tiger TV to share some of these great books. Learning about the hook for a book, and about what makes a character tick are all key elements in being a writer... thus making the connection between all those great books we are reading. The first two we will feature are Alan Gratz's newest novel, Refugee and Jean Claude Bemis's Nine Pound Hammer. Keep a look out for the Reader's and Writers on Tiger TV!!!

Getting Ready for the NEW!
BEFORE joining River Bend ..for the past several years I have been a renovation - decluttering Ninja! I just completed a big renovation of my home (kitchen, carpets, bathroom!) and also recently experienced a librarian's greatest challenge and dream... a quarter of million dollar library upgrade requiring about a 80% removal of the OLD book collection (my previous school) in order to usher in the NEW! I have always thought of myself as being super-organized but OMG have these projects been overwhelming! It is like climbing a jagged mountain and I feel as if I reached the summit... and now Looking out from the mountain top.. about to enter a beautiful new world at River Bend I still have some work to do before claiming an amazing NEW SCHOOL.
I am bound and determined to DE-CLUTTER all of my school files and emails before school starts. That's my first step toward getting ready for the new!
Decluttering TIP #1: Find the right place!
It's Summer! You are on vacation. You really need to go to your "summer place" just chilling. Is it zoning out in front of the TV? Tuned into music? Drinking a fancy coffee (or adult beverage) at a hip cafe sitting in a comfy chair. Listening to a podcast or book on tape?
Point here: make the drudgery of "decluttering" not so hideous.

#2 Tip: Slay the "EMAIL HYDRA"
Hit DELETE & Control the Monster!
A HYDRA is a mythic monster that grows a head every time one is cut off. That seems to be the innumerable list serves I am on! Every summer I swear I will cut it off at its heart... and every summer I find something a lot more fun to do. This year is different! Entering into River Bend I SWEAR I will slay this beast. I am getting rid of all that old stuff I don't need anymore!
I'm drinking coffee outside with my feet up on a wicker ottoman, listening to a cool podcast and am going thru my WCPSS email! ... I am super-embarrassed at how many email I have (by the way - the pict of 99999 unread is NOT mine! (Maybe at our first faculty meeting I will tell you just how many I deleted!) I HATE dealing with email and find it so tedious and soul crushing. The only way I have been able to deal with it is to listen to podcast or book on tape and then HIT DELETE... HITE DELETE.... HIT DELETE.... HIT DELETE.... HIT DELTE.
I have a personal goal of getting this INBOX BEAST down to under 10 unread messages.
WARNING: Did you know that we are transitioning to OUTLOOK... an entire new system that will replace LOTUS! YES! It's true. I would suggest/ advice that you create folders for your email to get on top of the various topics/senders but since we are transitioning I am going to suggest that you WAIT FOR OUTLOOK... THEN set up folders.
Till then my friends....
HIT DELETE! HIT DELETE! HIT DELETE
#3 Tip: "Downsize the Files"
How many flash drives do you own? External hard drive? Duplication in Google drive and the network drive at school? How many times have you been looking for and searched multiple drives? EEK! What a hair puller!
Take the time now after you delete those old email to dig into your flash drives and clean them up. Create folders with logical topics in Google where you can easily get to your stuff. In those "down times" with the coffee or in front of mindless TV..... line up those drives and start deleting what you don't need.
#4 Tip: One step at a time!
Don't worry about doing it all at once. How about just a 30 - 60 minutes in front of the TV. Otherwise you won't do it if you feel you have to do it all at once. Keeping it short and spread out over time to complete will help you get started AND might even start a habit!

My name is Ms. Deaton - your librarian, media specialist, and "infoninja"! I am so excited to open the doors to the library for eager students!
So.... I want to welcome you to my world. I think of the library as a big imagination factory and "room of requirements" (Harry Potter reference) where you can discover your hearts desire. You may need a story of encouragement, a laugh, the answer to a scientific mystery, and the keys to become the author of your own amazing life story. So what is your story? I cannot wait for you to discover a lot of phenomonal books we have on the shelf... but especially I cannot wait to see how your own life story unfolds while you are here at River Bend.... challenging yourself and dreaming of great things ahead.
